Netflix, YRF sign a multi-year collaboration, to mark ‘new era of storytelling’
Netflix and Yash Raj Films have unveiled a multi-year collaboration to co-produce digital content together.
The initial releases from this partnership consist of the thriller series "The Railway Men" and the film "Maharaj."
"Netflix and Yash Raj Films join forces to bring a new era of blockbusters! Coming soon," the streaming platform made the announcement on X, this Friday morning.
The partnership will "mark a new era of storytelling in India," the post further read.
According to a report in the US-based magazine Variety, this project stands as a heartfelt homage to the often-overlooked heroes of the tragic 1984 Bhopal gas disaster.
"The Railway Men" sheds light on the courageous actions of the Bhopal railway station employees who rescued numerous lives during this emergency.
The production boasts an ensemble cast led by actors R Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyenndu Sharma, and the rising talent Babil Khan.
This show also marks the directorial debut of Shiv Rawail, who previously served as an assistant director on "Dhoom 3".
Variety has also noted that the Netflix-YRF collaboration will introduce another captivating project, "Maharaj," a period film set in the 1800s.
"Maharaj" is a cinematic tale of a David-and-Goliath struggle, depicting the journey of a fearless journalist as they challenge a highly regarded societal icon, often hailed as a saviour of the masses.
This film will mark the debut for Aamir Khan's son, Junaid Khan, and it features an exceptional cast that includes Jaideep Ahlawat, Sharvari, and Shalini Pandey. Siddharth P Malhotra, known for "Hichki," will be directing the film.
Yash Raj Films has indeed enjoyed a remarkable year in 2023, with "Pathaan," featuring Shah Rukh Khan, emerging as the year's biggest Indian box office success. The studio also handled the international distribution of Shah Rukh's second blockbuster of the year, "Jawan".
Netflix has also benefited from its partnership with YRF, notably with the success of "The Romantics," a documentary series that explored the life and enduring legacy of YRF's founder, Yash Chopra.
