No one should play Rabindranath Tagore: Swastika Mukherjee
Swastika Mukherjee took to Twitter to express her displeasure with artistes representing the great poet Rabindranath Tagore in recent projects. Her post comes just two days after actor Anupam Kher announced his new project, where he is supposed to be playing Tagore.
"No one should play Robi Thakur. Please leave the man alone," read her post. Many Bengalis agreed with her while others disagreed with her post. One commenter wrote, "No one should play Rabi Thakur for a purpose."
"Bengal knows him well, but the rest of India does not. His narrative deserves to be told, and cinema is an excellent tool for doing so. But it all depends on which stage of his life is being portrayed. If it's only the last days in Shantiniketan, that's not much of a story," shared another netizen.
"If we are able to portray him with dignity, a film can be made, because I also have seen that the respect he receives in Bengal, no one cares about that throughout India. As a result, we must proceed with caution," wrote another.
Earlier on, Anupam Kher's look as Rabindranath Tagore went viral all-over social media. Sharing the project, he wrote "Delighted to portray Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in my 538th project. Will reveal the details in due course. It is my good fortune that I have got the privilege of embodying Gurudev on screen! Soon, I will share more information about this film with you."
Anupam was dressed in a costume reminiscent of Rabindranath Tagore in the first look photo. He posed like the Bengali poet, with white hair and a lengthy beard.
