Oscars to introduce Stunt Design category at 100th ceremony

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the introduction of a new Oscar category: Achievement in Stunt Design. This award will debut at the 100th Academy Awards in the year 2028, honouring films released in 2027.
The decision follows years of advocacy from industry professionals, notably director David Leitch and stunt coordinator Chris O'Hara, who emphasised the essential role of stunt design in filmmaking.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang acknowledged the historical significance of stunt work, stating, "Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking." They expressed pride in recognising the innovative contributions of stunt professionals.

Chad Stahelski, director of the "John Wick" franchise, welcomed the announcement but highlighted the collaborative nature of stunt work, noting the challenges in attributing such an award to a single individual.
This new category follows the recent addition of the Best Casting award, set to be presented at the 98th Oscars in 2026. The Academy plans to release specific eligibility rules and presentation details for the Stunt Design Award in 2027.
The inclusion of this category marks a significant step in acknowledging the technical and creative artistry of stunt professionals, reflecting a broader industry effort to recognise behind-the-scenes contributions to filmmaking.
