“Ponniyin Selvan-1” crosses Rs 500 crore worldwide, beats “Bahubali”
Mani Ratnam's "Ponniyin Selvan-1 (PS1)" has made Rs 500 crore worldwide just after fifty days of its September 30 release, making it only the second Tamil movie to do so after the Rajnikanth-starring "2.0." In Tamil Nadu, it has become the highest grossing film with gross earnings of over Rs. 230 crores, surpassing SS Rajamouli's "Baahubali 2".
Arulmozhivarman was played by Jayam Ravi in the movie, while other important characters included Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
The film narrates the tale of Arulmozhivarman (Ponniyin Selvan), who later rose to power as Rajaraja i, the Chola emperor (947-1014).
After a decade, Aishwarya Rai made her return to Tamil cinema with "PS 1". Aishwarya was seen portraying both Nandini and her silent mother Mandakini Devi. When the film first came out, Aishwarya's performance was praised by critics and audiences.
In a recent interview, Mani Ratnam stated that the sequel to the franchise will hit theaters in another six to nine months and that the crew is now working on post-production.
