‘Quality over quantity’
Noted actress Rokeya Prachi has been working in films and on the stage for quite some time now. She was honoured with the National Film Award for her enchanting performance in "Dukhai" (2007). Rokeya's performances in "Matir Moina" (2002) and "Swopnodanay" (2007) also received much appreciation both domestically and internationally.
In an interview with The Daily Star, Rokeya opened up about her thoughts on the film industry, her career and much more.
Is it true that you will be acting in a film based on Selina Hossain's novel, "Japito Jibon"?
Selina Hossain is one of the most renowned fiction writers in our country. Her contributions to Bangladeshi art and literature is immense. I will soon be seen on a government-granted film, which is based on "Japito Jibon", which is being directed by Habibul Islam Habib. The film will feature an amazing cast, intricate storytelling and wonderful locations. Overall, the experience of working on this movie has been a completely new experience for me, which is definitely a good thing.
Is this the first time that you will appear opposite Afzal Hossain?
Yes. Afzal Hossain is one of the biggest stars in Bangladesh. As a colleague, he is extremely supportive and has helped me quite a lot during shooting. In 'Japito Jibon', we will be seen as husband and wife. However, our characters will be quite different compared to the typical on-screen husband-wife duo.
Have you started shooting for any new movies for this new year?
I will begin shooting for a new film sometime this month. It will be quite challenging, as I will be playing quite a unique character. So, I am preparing myself for this role. At the same time, I am also getting ready to take on a few OTT films.
Once upon a time, you were a regular in the theatre scene. Could you tell us about your experience?
I kicked-off my acting career by working with the Aranyak Natyadal theatre troupe. Before that, I had only attended a few workshops by Loko Natyadal and worked for a theatre centre for a while.
What would you say is your greatest achievement as an actress?
I think I was extremely lucky to have gotten the opportunity to work on the famous film, "Dukhai", even going on to bag a National Award for my performance. Also, my film, "Matir Moina", was nominated for the Oscars, while "Swopnodanay" received much praise from multiple domestic film festivals. What else can be a greater achievement for an artiste?
In the future, what kind of roles can we expect to see you in?
As an artiste, I think it is rather difficult to find a role that suits me. To be honest, for me, it doesn't matter if the character is small or big. What matters is the significance of the role. So, I am waiting for such good roles and projects to work on. My focus is not on doing a lot of projects, rather, I prefer to do a few selective projects which have a lot of quality.
