Rituparna Sengupta coming with ‘Datta’ this June
Popular Tollywood actor Rituparna Sengupta will grace the silver screen in the upcoming Bengali film adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's renowned classic "Datta". Set to release in theaters on June 16, this cinematic rendition marks the third adaptation of the novel, with previous versions being released in 1951 and 1976.
"The writers who inspire our real life through the power of their pen are like fire igniting our soul. One such writer in Bengali literature is Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. I was honored to do the film 'Datta' which was one of his masterpieces in the history of literature," Rituparna said while speaking about the film.
In a recent interview, debutant director Nirmal Chakraborty expressed his admiration for literary classics by esteemed authors like Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. He emphasized the appeal of such works for filmmakers, as they offer a rich canvas to craft narratives that resonate with the audience through the language of cinema.
Maintaining the authenticity of the period was a priority for the production team. The director praised Rituparna Sengupta's seamless portrayal of Bijoya, a multifaceted character who possesses beauty, intelligence, compassion, and occasional assertiveness. The liberated and affluent Brahmo woman, engaged informally to Naren, finds her perspective on him shifting as she discovers his true nature.
