'Screen time is irrelevant if your performance is top-notch'
Rukaiya Jahan Chamak has joined the cast of the liberation war-based film "Joy Banglar Dhoni" directed by K M Khurshid. The story of this film is written by former Minister of Shipping, Shajahan Khan. Chamak started shooting the movie on Wednesday. In this film, the actress will be seen opposite actor Nirab Hossain.
"I have played the character of a Birangona/ freedom fighter in the film, who actively participated in the liberation war. The role will be portrayed in two timelines, one in 1971 and the other in the present times. I feel very lucky to work on such a great project," said Chamak to The Daily Star.
Chamak replaced actor Sunerah Binte Kamal in the film, as she backed out from the film a few weeks back due to some disagreements with the director.
In this film, renowned actor Asaduzzaman Noor will be playing the role of Shombhu Rajakar in his youth and old age. Chamak is elated to work with such a senior actor in the early of her career.
"Although I haven't done any scene with him yet, I am very excited to learn a lot of things from him. I will put my heart into this film."
Although she is a known face on television and OTT platforms, this is not her first film.
"Everyone is thinking that this is my first film. However, that's not true. I have worked in another film before. It will be released this December hopefully. I can't reveal any more details now," she said.
In a very short span of her career, Chamak dazzled the audience with her brilliant performance and charming aura. She thinks that with a lot of hard work and a pinch of luck, it has been possible for her to make a space for herself in the industry. She caught the attention of the audience with her performance in the web series "Mohanagar".
"I got recognition from the people of Bangladesh and Kolkata. I always think that the screen time doesn't matter if your performance is top-notch," said Chamak.
Apart from acting, she has also carved her space in the world of film direction. Recently, she completed her first directorial full-length film "D-Dhaka Drug Dealers". When asked why she chose to direct films besides acting, she replied,
"Every art form is precious to me. I want to work on all the beautiful and brilliant projects, whether as an actor or a director. It doesn't matter which role I take, rather it matters how dedicated I am to my work. Living and staying with an art form is what matters the most to me."
Chamak wishes to play the role of Lady Macbeth someday, if any filmmaker ever makes a modern adaptation of the film "Lady Macbeth". She also told TDS that she wants to work in films, through which she can empower young women in society.
