Shariful to join Cannes as an academic expert from Bangladesh

Dr Shariful Islam, assistant professor at the Department of Media Communication and Journalism at North South University, is set to participate in the 78th Cannes Film Festival as an academic expert. The festival, one of the most prestigious gatherings in global cinema, will run from May 13 to 24 in Cannes, France.

He is expected to participate in film workshops and hold discussions with international cinema experts. Moreover, he is confirmed to speak in at least one official session at the festival, to highlight Bangladeshi culture and the evolving landscape of the country's cinema.

Shariful, who previously attended the 76th edition of the festival as a journalist, will therefore represent Bangladesh in a new capacity this year.

During his earlier visit, he produced feature stories, photographs and social media coverage for local outlets including The Daily Nayadiganta.

Describing the opportunity as a significant honour, Shariful noted that representing Bangladesh at Cannes as a scholar, rather than a reporter, reflects broader recognition of the country's academic and creative contributions to global film discourse.

With over 15 years of experience in journalism and academia, Dr Shariful Islam has worked at international agencies such as Xinhua News Agency and Wuhan Television.
