15,000 face waterlogging as floodwater enters low-lying areas in Sirajganj

The water level is increasing in Jamuna River and is resulting in inundation of low-lying areas in Sirajganj.

The lives of 15,000 residents in five villages of Jalalpur union of Sirajganj's Shahjadpur upazila is being affected due to waterlogging.

The water level is increasing rapidly in Jamuna River while intensifying water-logging in at least three villages, our Pabna correspondent reports quoting Jalalpur Union Parishad Chairman Hazi Sultan Hossain.

"Although the water level is increasing in Jamuna, it is still flowing below the danger level," Md Nasir Uddin, sub-divisional engineer of Sirajganj Water Development Board told The Daily Star.

"Jamuna River is flowing at 12.47 metres at the Sirajganj hard point which is 88 centimetres below the danger level. Due to the onslaught of water from upstream, water-level is increasing in Jamuna," said Nasir adding that "Jamuna may exceed danger level in the upcoming week."
