3 Munshiganj upazilas without power for over 4 hours

People of three upazilas of Munshiganj, including Sadar, was without power for four-and-a-half hours after a storm damaged a substation of the district.

The 132/33 KV-substation located in Mirkadim was damaged by the storm that swept through Muktarpur, Mirkadim, Rikabi Bazar, Firangi Bazar and adjoining areas around 6:45pm, said Engineer Enamul, deputy general manager of Munshiganj Palli Bidyut Samity.

Munshiganj Sadar, Lohajang and Sirajdikhan upazilas were without power following the damage of the substation, our Munshiganj correspondent reports quoting the official.

The power supply resumed in the affected areas between 10:00pm and 10:30pm.

The storm also damaged the pandal set up by Mirkadim Municipality for the Eid Jamaat of 15,000 devotees.

It will not be possible to hold Eid jamaat there tomorrow, said Mayor of Mirkadim Municipality Abdus Salam.

"Many houses in our area have been damaged by the storm. However, the pandal for Eid prayers has been damaged in such a way that it is not possible to hold jamaat there anymore. We have already made announcements so that nobody comes to offer prayers here," he said.

"We still don't know how many houses have been damaged," the mayor said.

Munshiganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tariquzzaman said, "We have not received any report of casualty in the storm."
