Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan today said residents of Chattogram will largely be free from waterlogging this monsoon.

"The work to reap the benefits of waterlogging has just begun. I don't think any work has actually been done so far. We are trying to reduce waterlogging as much as we can during this monsoon," he said.

Adilur made the remarks while responding to a query from reporters after inspecting the progress of the excavation work of a new canal in Baraipara area of Bahaddarhat.

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain was present at the time.

The CCC has been implementing the Tk 1,362 crore project to dig a 2.9-km long canal from Bahaddarhat Baraipara to the Karnaphuli River since 2014.

The Tk 1,362 crore project was supposed to be completed by June 2017, but its deadline has been extended to June 2024. Although the project deadline expired more than six months ago, the project is still not completed.

During the visit, the adviser asked the CCC officials about the progress of the project.

He told reporters that although the full benefits of the ongoing waterlogging relief projects in Chattogram may not be available this year, they will be fully available during the monsoon next year because the work that will yield results has just begun.

"However, we are continuing our efforts to ensure that the waterlogging problem this monsoon is significantly less compared to previous years," he said.

Efforts are being made so that the public suffers less from waterlogging than before, he added.
