Floods worsen in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat; All rivers flowing above danger level

The flooding in Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts has worsened further as water in all rivers is flowing above the danger level.

In Kurigram, a farmer drowned in the flood water yesterday (June 18, 2022) while crossing the Sankosh River with his livestock. The deceased was identified as Azad Hossain (42), son of late Abul Hossain of Kurigram's Nageshwari upazila, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent.

According to Water Development Board sources, water of Brahmaputra River at Chilmari point in Kurigram has been flowing 32cm above the danger level since 6am today. The water level in Dharla River has risen 27cm above the danger level. The water level of Dudhkumar river is flowing 23cm above the danger level at Pateshwari point.

Abdulla Al Mamun, executive engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board, today said that water level of all rivers is rising due to continuous rain and the flow of water from the mountain slopes and the water level in all rivers may continue to rise for the next 2-3 days. The water of the Brahmaputra River, in particular, may rise even more, he added.

Nearly 20 villages were inundated with water flowing from Dudhkumar river after about 100 metres of WDB's flood control dam at Namahaila village in Nageswari upazila of Kurigram collapsed.

Ashraful Alam Rasel, Rowmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said that more than 50,000 people have been displaced in Rowmari upazila. Government educational institutions and flood shelters are being used as shelters.
