Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has forecast another moderate flood in the country's northern districts after Eid-ul-Azha, which is likely to be celebrated on July 9 or 10.

According to the Water Development Board (WDB), due to rain in upstream, the water of Dharla, Brahmaputra and Teesta rivers in Kurigram and Lalmonirhat started increasing since last night (June 28, 2022).

On June 23, FFWC issued an extended forecast for the next 15 days to one month.

According to the forecast, the flood situation in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur and Bogura will improve in the last week of this month. The river water will be close to the danger level during this time.

But the rivers, in the first week of July, will flow over the danger level again, which may cause a moderate flood situation.

Talking to this correspondent, Md Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, executive engineer of the FFWC, said there has been some change in the flood forecast issued on June 23.

For now, there is no possibility of flood in these districts before Eid. If before Eid, the water in the rivers of northern districts continue to rise, the districts may face moderate flood after Eid.

Mostafa Kamal Palash, a weather and climate researcher at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, told The Daily Star, "Before Eid, if the water level of the river in the northern districts increase, the risk of flooding is much higher."

He said there is also a possibility of moderate to major flooding during this time.
