The flood situation in three upazilas -- Rajarhat, Ulipur and Chilmari -- of Kurigram remains unchanged as the water in the Teesta river has been flowing above the danger level today.

As of noon today, the river water was flowing nine centimetres above the danger level at Kaunia point of the Teesta Barrage, our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports quoting Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of WDB in Kurigram.

In the meantime, the flood situation improved in five upazilas of Lalmonirhat as the Teesta is flowing 19 cm below the danger level at Dalia point, said Shunil Kumar, executive engineer of WDB in the district.

In Burirhat area of Kurigram's Rajarhat upazila, a portion of a 60-metre dyke of the WDB collapsed due to water flow last night.

The remaining part of the dyke is also at risk and WDB personnel have been trying to protect it by dumping geo bags since last night, said WDB official Mamun.

"We have already informed the matter to higher authorities. The new dyke will be constructed once the necessary allocation is available," he said.

Majibur Rahman, 68, a farmer at Burirhat, said, "The dyke was built in 1999. We never thought it would collapse."

Abdul Aziz, 60, another farmer of the same area, said, "If the rest of the dyke collapses, we will lose our arable land and homesteads due to the flood."
