Fire at the Sundarbans: More time needed to fully extinguish flame

Officials have said that it will take more time to fully extinguish the flames in the Sundarbans with the Bhola River drying up due to low tide. Firefighters have been unable to spray water and smoke has continued to rise from dry leaves in some areas, with occasional flare-ups.

However, the fire in the Shaplar Beel area of the Sundarbans East Forest Division is now largely under control.

Ten units from Fire Service with the Forest Department are actively working to put out the fire.

The Forest Department has also been using drones to monitor the affected area.

Kazi Muhammad Nurul Karim, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, said, "We are making every possible effort to control the fire, and the situation is largely under control. However, there is still smoke in some places, and any flare-ups are being immediately tackled. At this moment, pumping water is not possible as the river has dried up during low tide."

Assistant Director (AD) of the Khulna Divisional Fire Service Office, Md Abu Bakkar Zaman said, "Ten units from Khulna and Bagerhat are working to extinguish the fire in the Sundarbans. Once the tide rises, water spraying will begin."

Meanwhile, the Forest Department has formed a three-member committee, led by Dipon Chandra Das, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) of the Chandpai Range, to determine the cause of the fire and assess the damage in the Teisher Chila-Shaplar Beel area. The committee has been given seven working days to submit its report.

This is the second committee formed to investigate fires in the Sundarbans. On Sunday, another investigation committee was established under the Chandpai Range ACF to probe the fire incident in the Kolomteji area, which occurred on Saturday.
