2 land in jail for stealing lemurs from Gazipur Safari Park

A court yesterday sent two people to jail after being arrested in a case filed over the stealing of three lemurs from Gazipur Safari Park in Sreepur upazila.
The accused are Jahirul Islam and Nipen Mahmud.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Joynal Abedin Mondal confirmed this to The Daily Star at 10:00pm yesterday.
He said after a case was registered on April 7 in connection with the theft, the two were arrested and produced before a court which sent them to jail.
Safari Park in-charge Md Rafiqul Islam told The Daily Star that on the night of March 23 that miscreants stole three lemurs by cutting the net of the park's fence.
"We searched the area. I filed a GD with the police station on the 24th. An investigation committee headed by the divisional forest officer, wildlife management and nature conservation area has been formed in this incident," he said.
Authorities said that there have been two thefts in the park since August 5. It has happened before. The boundary wall of the park is low, it is easy to steal by cutting the net. There are no security guards. After August 5, the CCTV cameras were broken.
There are more than 1,300 animals of different species in the park. Authorities fear that other animals may be stolen at any time.
