Nilgai escapes from Gazipur Safari Park

A male nilgai has escaped from the Gazipur Safari Park after climbing off a wall in Gazipur's Sreepur.

Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Joynal Abedin Mandal around 11:00pm yesterday told The Daily Star, "The safari park authorities haven't filed a general diary in this regard."

Although the nilgai escaped on Thursday, it could not be traced down. The park authorities are conducting a search operation.

However, locals said they spotted a nilgai in several places in Sreepur upazila and the neighbouring Bhaluka upazila.

The safari park's officer-in-charge and Assistant Conservator of Forests ACF Md Rafiqul Islam told the media, "Around January 16 afternoon, a nilgai was chasing another nilgai. At that time, the male nilgai climbed a wall and escaped."

"Since the incidents, campaigns have been going on using loudspeakers in various places in the upazila. Local residents have seen the Nilgai in the forests of Joynatoli and Bhaluka upazilas. We are trying to rescue it based on such reports."

Rafiqul also said, "I am appealing to the local residents with the help of the media, to inform us immediately if they see the Nilgai."

Sreepur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Barrister Sajeeb Ahmed said they were not aware of the incident.

"The safari park authorities did not inform us about the matter. If they seek our help, we will provide full cooperation," he said.
