Flash floods leading to rise in water level in haor areas of 4 districts

Recent flash floods in Netrakona and Kishoreganj has inundated new areas, while the water level in the haor areas of Sunamganj and Sylhet have been on the rise.

The situation has worsened in Netrakona's Khaliajuri and Madan upazilas as haor water levels have risen to 10cm today.

Flood water has inundated 133 hectares of boro land in Netrakona, including 123 hectares in Khaliajuri and 10 hectares in Madan upazila, according to FM Mobarak Ali, deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Netrakona, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.

The flash flood situation has also worsened in various Kishoreganj upazilas. In Itna, Mithamain, and Bajitpur upazilas, a total of 462-hectares of land have been flooded, according to Md Saiful Alam, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), flood water is stagnant in some areas while increasing in others, he added.

The deputy director is concerned that the crop protection dams in various haor areas are in risk due to the worsening flood situation.

Due to continuous rainfall in India's Meghalaya and Assam, the water level in the haor areas of Sunamganj and Sylhet is increasing.

In 24 hours till 6pm today, 1.3m of water increased in the rivers, according to Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), reports our local correspondent.

However, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) today released a special circular assuring that no early flash floods are expected in the near future.

Surma was flowing below 1.09 cm of the danger level in Sunamganj this morning at 9am, while Jadukata was flowing below 1.84 cm and Puratan Surma was flowing below 2.69 cm.

From last night in Sylhet, a flash flood began submerging haor areas in Companiganj and Gowainghat upazilas.

In anticipation of the flood, many farmers in the upazilas have begun harvesting half-ripe paddy.
