The birds were rescued from the premises of Central Shaheed Minar and the secretariat area this morning (October 25, 2022).

They fell from the trees due to the strong wind and rain Cyclone Sitrang caused, reports our Dhaka University correspondent.

After receiving information from the Proctorial Team of Dhaka University, members of the Wildlife Crime Control unit of the Forest Department rushed there and rescued the birds.

"Around 70 birds have been rescued by one of our teams in front of the secretariat," Ashim Mallik, inspector of the Wildlife Crime Control Unit told The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, another team of the Wildlife Crime Control Unit rescued 130 birds from the Shaheed Minar, said Wildlife Crime Control Unit Director Sana Ullah Patwari, who led the drive.

They released some of the birds with first aid and took away the birds, which were seriously injured, to their offices for treatment, added the director.

Two members of DU's proctorial team told The Daily Star that big trees in the Shaheed Minar area are home to thousands of birds.
