Man detained with 14 migratory birds in Sylhet
Forest department in Sylhet today detained an alleged wild and migratory bird seller while he was carrying 14 migratory birds, killed with poison.
The detainee is Abdus Salam (51), of Haripur in Sylhet's Jaintiapur upazila, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
On information, a team of forest department reached Humayun Rashid Chattar area of Sylhet city this afternoon and detained Salam, said Md Toufiqul Islam, divisional forest officer in Sylhet.
"We recovered 14 migratory pygmy geese, commonly known as Bali Hash. We will file a regular case under Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act and will hand him over to police," he said.
During the detention, the bird seller told journalists that poachers poison the birds in the haor areas of Jaintiapur upazila and then these are sold to different hotels in Haripur area.
He also admitted to selling these birds to people in Sylhet city privately.
Abdul Karim Kim, general secretary of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa) Sylhet chapter, said, "They killed migratory and wild birds by poisoning. As the vigilance is lax, this heinous crime continues and we want stern action from the authority to stop this for good."
