Win rain-curtailed final by eight wickets to clinch Asia Cup title for record sixth time

A very brief fireworks display took place after the final without any big cheers as by that time the stadium was nearly empty, following the early departure of the crowds. Nothing would have been sweeter for the partisan fans, who turned up at the ground from the early afternoon and then braved a thunderstorm, than to return home at midnight after being part of history but India re-established their supremacy in the shortest format of the game to clinch the first Asia Cup T20 title with a comfortable eight-wicket victory over the Tigers. Instead the Tigers fans left the ground with only one sweet memory from the final -- a dazzling 13-ball 33 tornado from Mahmudullah Riyad who ruled the pitch after the actual storm played havoc last night and forced a reduction of the match to a 15-over affair.

Bangladesh fans however cannot be fully disappointed as a much better side ensured that they didn't give any chance to a much-improved T20 team. When India depart for their home and Bangladesh fly to the same destination today, yet another feather in MS Dhoni's illustrious cap will give them a boost ahead of the ICC World Twenty20, while the performance in the Asia Cup will give Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Co newfound confidence in the newest format of the game.

The cheers from the stands continued even when India required 19 runs from the last 12 balls with eight wickets in hand in chase of a 121-run target, but the most successful India captain MS Dhoni silenced them in the very first ball of the penultimate over as the mighty right-hander got a perfect length ball on off stump from Al-Amin Hossain to cart it miles over midwicket.

Dhoni finished the chase in style when he lofted a full toss cleanly over the midwicket boundary to ensure India's Asia Cup title for sixth time but before that he lofted a full ball inside out over cover in a way that will remain in the mind for a long time.

India's batting credit however must go to man-of-the match Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli who shared a 94-run second-wicket stand after Al-Amin gave the home side an early breakthrough by removing Rohit Sharma in the second over. Dhawan made his career-best 60 off 44 balls while Kohli was there in the end unbeaten on 41 to celebrate the victory in the middle along with his skipper.

Bangladesh's bowling was also not at its best and their ploy to attack with a four-pronged pace attack did not make any impact.

Earlier, brilliant sunshine all through the day suggested that perfect weather would greet a much-anticipated clash in the Asia Cup T20 final, but suddenly a storm arrived to take centre stage in the drama, much like a sudden storm of sixes changes the complexion of a T20 match.

In the end cricket and its aficionados however emerged triumphant with Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and MS Dhoni walking to the middle for the toss two hours after the scheduled start amid deafening applause from the capacity crowd.

Dhoni claimed batting second was an advantage in a shortened game after winning the toss and his bowlers justified their skipper's decision before Riyad seized the initiative by mercilessly punishing the Indian bowlers during his unbeaten 33, which featured two fours and as many sixes.  The cameo took the Tigers to 120 for five.

One-down Sabbir Rahman had also contribution with the bat during 29-ball 32 but he missed out on the late charge.

Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar made a good start, if not a flying one. The two Southpaws smashed some brilliant boundaries, charging Ashish Nehra brutally, but the left-arm seamer exacted revenge by removing Soumya for 14 in the fourth over. The length was not short enough but Soumya tried to slog it off the front foot over midwicket but mistimed it horribly to be caught at mid-off.

Tamim was quick to follow his partner in the next over as Jasprit Bumrah trapped the experienced left-

hander in front. Tamim swung across the line at a good-length ball but missed and was hit flush on the pad to bring a promoted Shakib Al Hasan to the middle, but the left-hander was dismissed after hitting three boundaries during his 16-ball 21. Shakib's slog sweep against spinner Ravichandran Ashwin landed in short fine leg's hands.  The loss of regular wickets saw Bangladesh restricted to 68 runs for three wickets in 10 overs.

Mushfiqur Rahim's batting woes continued as the right-hander fell victim of a run-out for a 5-ball 4 and then Mashrafe came ahead of the in-form Riyad in a bid to repeat his heroics in the Pakistan match but he was dismissed for a first-ball duck and the eventual total would need some extraordinary bowling to defend against a formidable Indian batting line-up.

India however should be grateful for the incredible drainage system and hardworking ground staff in Mirpur, apart from the sporting crowd, as it took only one hour to prepare the ground after one hour of incessant rain.
