Ex-SP Babul quizzed again

Denies involvement in killing wife

Former superintendent of police Babul Akter yesterday reiterated that he had no involvement in the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.

He was quizzed for almost four hours yesterday afternoon by the investigation officer of the murder case at the Chittagong Metropolitan Police headquarters.

Emerging from the IO and Additional Deputy Commissioner (north) Kamruzzaman's room in the evening, he made the claim before journalists.

“The investigation officer asked me many questions and I answered those,” Babul said.

About the allegation of his involvement in the murder, he said anyone could allege anything but it has to be proved through evidence.

He went to the CMP headquarters at 3:45pm and left around 8:00pm.

ADC Kamruzzaman said, “I called him [Babul] over to discuss some things related to the case.”

Asked whether he had found evidence of Babul's involvement, he said, “It was not the time to call him an accused.”

Asked when they would submit a charge sheet, he said, “As soon as possible.”

On June 25 last year, Babul was questioned to ascertain whether he had any link to his wife's murder. He was again quizzed by the investigation officer on December 15.

Three assailants stabbed and shot Mitu, 30, dead when she was taking her son to his school bus stop at GEC intersection in the port city on June 5 last year.

Police said they arrested Motaleb Mia Wasim and Md Anwar on June 25.

The arrestees in a confessional statement made before a Chittagong court said they along with Musa, Nurun Nabi, Rashed, Kalu and Shahjahan took part in the killing.

Nabi and Rashed were killed in a “gunfight” with police on July 5. Shahjahan, Wasim and Anwar are now in jail.

Musa's family repeatedly alleged that law enforcers picked him up on June 22. The whereabouts of Musa and Kalu are still unknown.
