Father and son face 155 cases
The BNP has nominated Salauddin Ahmed to run for Dhaka-4 constituency and chose his son, Tanvir Ahmed, as a backup candidate.
Both father and son have one thing in common -- a stack of criminal cases.
Salahuddin is accused in at least 80 cases while Tanvir in 75.
The cases were filed against the duo in the last few years with different police stations including Shyampur, Kadomtoli and Jatrabari in Dhaka.
Almost all the cases were filed either under the Special Powers Act of 1974 or different sections of the Penal Code 1860 in connection with street violence and other such incidents that occurred during street agitations in the past five years by the BNP-led alliance.
All the cases remain pending with different trial courts, while Salahuddin and Tanvir had both been granted bail by the High Court.
Salahuddin was also accused in 14 more cases which were dismissed earlier and Tanvir was accused in four more, which too were dismissed.
Salahuddin was elected as an MP in fifth, sixth and eighth parliamentary elections.
Both father and son were present at the office of the returning officer (RO) while their nomination papers were being scrutinised.
Both of their nominations papers were later accepted by the RO.
