Video of Nusrat: Ex-Sonagazi OC sued under Digital Security Act
Moazzem Hossain, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonagazi Model Police Station, was sued under the Digital Security Act yesterday on charges of recording a video of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi without her consent and spreading the footage on social media.
Supreme Court Lawyer Syed Sayedul Haque Suman filed the case with the cyber tribunal in Dhaka.
After a hearing, Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge Ash Sams Joglul Hossain took cognisance of the case, recorded the statement of the complainant and instructed the deputy inspector general of Police of the Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the matter and submit a report by April 30.
In his complaint, Suman said on March 27 the then OC took the principal and two madras students, including Nusrat, to his office and cross-examined Nusrat on different points.
The police official video recorded the questioning without Nusrat's consent and later posted in on social media which was illegal.
The video footage shows the then OC asking Nusrat different defamatory and objectionable questions one after another.
The complainant saw the video and thought that such an irresponsible government official should be brought under trial.
The complainant appealed to the court to issue an arrest warrant against the OC for his alleged involvement with recording Nusrat's statement and spreading it on social media.
On April 10, the OC was withdrawn as Nusrat family's alleged that they were not getting his full cooperation.
Nusrat, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa in Sonagazi upazila of Feni, was set ablaze on April 6 allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against the madrasa principal Siraj Ud Doula for sexually harassing her last month.
After fighting for her life for five days, Nusrat died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10.
