Remembering Covid warrior: Library named after policeman
Commemorating the death of a police constable who died of Covid-19 while discharging duty as a frontline fighter during the coronavirus outbreak in the country, the Khansama Police Station in Dinajpur has opened a library after his name, providing solace to the grieved family members.
Md Nazmul Islam, who joined Bangladesh police in 2007, died of covid-19 on October 15 last year while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH). He played a crucial role as a frontline fighter in Gaibandha district. Khansama upazila of Dinajpur was his birthplace.
After ten months of his death, the Police department has built a single-room library building at the compound of the Khansama Police Station.
Nazmul Islam Smriti Pathagar (Nazmul Islam Memorial Library) has a collection of around 300 books, said Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Khansama Police Station.
Local lawmaker AH Mahmood Ali inaugurated the library virtually on August 17 as chief guest while Khansama Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ahmed Mahbub-Ul Islam, and OC Kamal Hossain of Khansama Police Station, were present as special guests.
Family members of Nazmul Islam were also present on the occasion.
The lawmaker, in his speech, said that the library at the police station will be an excellent place for locals in the Upazila to garner knowledge.
He urged the youths to shun the path of drug addiction and develop reading habit.
Kamal Hossain, the OC of Khansama Police Station, said they will take initiative to collect more books for the library to enrich the collection.
"It's our little effort to remember Nazmul through the library," he said.
Sharmin Akter Lovely, the widow of Nazmul Islam, said that the pandemic has taken away her husband early.
"But, this effort of Bangladesh Police will provide a little solace to us," she said.
