Dengue cases cross 50,000 mark, three more die

With 767 new dengue cases recorded yesterday, the total number of people infected with the mosquito-borne disease crossed the 50,000 mark this year.

Besides, the death toll has risen to to 216, with three more fatalities.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the number of total cases rose to 50,759 in the past 24 hours till yesterday morning, of which, 17,760 are from outside Dhaka.

Of the deaths, 128 occurred in Dhaka, 24 in Cox's Bazar, 29 in Chattogram, nine in Barishal, seven in Khulna, five in Mymensingh, two each in Rajshahi and Narail, and one each in Narsingdi, Kushtia, Pabna, Bagerhat, Khagrachhari, Bogura, Madaripur and Feni.

A total of 47,814 patients have already been released. Of them, 16,471 are from outside Dhaka. Some 2,729 dengue patients are still undergoing treatment, of whom, 1,201 are from outside Dhaka.

To recover quickly from the disease, IEDCR Director Tahmina Shirin suggested taking sufficient fluids in any form like oral saline, fruit juice and coconut water.

"A patient should take fluids during fever and continue do so even after their condition improves," she added.

Patients need to be hospitalised when they feel like vomiting, pain in the stomach, have breathing issues, or bleed from any part of the body, she advised.
