The Monsoon Guests: Plight we can’t seem to stop

The monsoon season comes with its aesthetics, its hassles in this bustling city, but most of all, its yearly guests, Mosquitoes. Our guests of the season seem to go through a rampaging period during this time. They get their invitation from places all over us. The water that is lodged in many places due to rain in this season, humidity and other external factors that creates favorable breeding conditions for mosquitoes to lay their eggs in and exponentially cause the growth in their numbers to insurmountable figures.

Even though the City Corporations in different locality have been trying to stop the blatant chaos the mosquitoes spread, they have been failing to cover all grounds, such as clearing up the drains and keeping their waste and water management system to an effective level. People in our communities are also not careful enough in dispensing the water that is stored up because of rain some places such as Flower pots, ditches, tires, drains etc.

Hence, unbeknownst to the people in these localities, these monsoon guests reproduce like wildfires and spread many dangerous diseases such as Malaria, Dengue Fever, and most recently, the Chikungunya Fever. In 2022 alone, till July, the DGHS has accounted for 1,670 dengue cases and 1,449 recoveries. Issues relating to diseases spread by mosquitoes have been the cause of numerous deaths as well.

These numbers are likely to increase further on because of lack of awareness, proper initiatives not taken by the local authorities and scarce resources to repel these mosquitoes to continue breeding in every corner of the cities and localities. There's also a lack of effectiveness of the pesticides and the medicine that are being used to stop these mosquitoes from doubling up in numbers.

There is also a lack of Medical Resources to protect ourselves from these pests. Available Sprays can be harmful to our environments, lack of consumer level products to help us protect from them and nothing to protect ourselves when we go out in different localities infested with these uninvited guests. We, as a society have an even bigger responsibility to protect our surroundings and the people around us.

Proper initiatives need to be implemented for better safety regarding mosquitoes, as well as campaigning for making the communities aware of their surroundings and breeding spaces can be essential as well. Resources to tackle these pests need to be enhanced and effective in order to limit the scope of them reproducing. Medical infrastructure also needs to be developed to tackle the cases of various diseases spread by them to an even greater length. Covid-19 pandemic gave us a hard look into the reality of things, and we must do better now to stop the spread of these disease to safeguard our society. By working together, we can stop this infestation slowly, but effectively and stop anyone else from risking their lives because of diseases contracted through them.
