16 pups found dead at Kolkata hospital trigger outrage

Animal rights activists in India and netizens on social media were outraged after 16 mutilated and dead puppies were found in garbage bags at a hospital in Kolkata yesterday.

The bodies of the puppies were dumped in the bags inside NRS Medical College and Hospital in the heart of the city, our Kolkata correspondent reports.

An animal rights activist, who lived nearby, immediately came to the spot and retrieved the bodies of 16 dead pups from the bags and rescued some adult dogs which were also found there in unconscious state.

The bodies of the puppies have been sent for postmortem while the adult dogs were sent for treatment to Belgachhia Veterinary Hospital.

The incident drew flaks from animal lovers and animal rights activists in India.

Later, a disturbing video of two women beating some puppies to death went viral on social media, triggering outrage among the netizens. The video appeared to have been taken by residents of a dental college hostel adjacent to the NRS Hospital, where the puppies were found.

According to the video, a caretaker and a nursing stuff of NRS Medical College and Hospital allegedly poisoned the puppies and then beat those to death.

The police are examining the CCTV footage to identify the two women; some claimed that they have been identified and will be arrested shortly.
