Bollywood’s Khans silent over Delhi violence, draw criticism on social media
Although several Bollywood celebrities have already condemned the communal violence in Delhi that claimed 47 lives, big names like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan have maintained silence -- leading fans to question their stance, reports Gulf News.
People, including other celebrities across social media platforms, are asking when will the revered Bollywood superstars including Akshay Kumar and Ranveer Singh -- who often play indestructible heroes with heightened moral radar on the big screen -- will speak up on issues that are tearing the social fabric of India.
In a clip shared recently by China's ambassador to India, Sun Weidong, Aamir Khan can be seen addressing the citizens of China. "Since I read about the outbreak of coronavirus in China, I have been extremely concerned. I have been following this tragedy with a lot of pain in my heart," Aamir says in the video.
To which Kubbra Sait, an Indian actress responded, "And how exactly deep is your love and concern for India? #AamirKhan".
Kubbra's response gave rise to a debate on Twitter. While some users supported her, others backed Aamir Khan saying that he only raised an awareness regarding a health crisis.
On the other hand, Akshay Kumar, when asked about the pressing issue, refused to be drawn into a debate about India's precarious political landscape but condemned the violence and destruction of property wholeheartedly, according to the Gulf News. He also made a plea to all his fans that violence is never the answer to any problem.
Although, Shah Rukh and Salman have not yet made any statement about the violence, celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker, Richa Chadha, lyricist Javed Akhtar and director Anurag Kashyap continue to boldly speak up against the senseless bloodshed on the Indian streets highlighting police brutality.
