Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a strong push for the G7's support for the proposal moved at the WTO by India and South Africa for a patent waiver on Covid-19 related technologies.

The proposal for a temporary patent waiver has been broadly welcomed by the US but the EU is reluctant to back it.

Modi also conveyed India's willingness to share with other developing countries its experience and expertise in successful use of open source digital tools for contact tracing and vaccine management, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

Participating in the first outreach session of the G7 summit on Saturday, he called for global unity, leadership and solidarity to prevent future pandemics and emphasized "the special responsibility of democratic and transparent societies in this regard," according to readout issued by the PMO late last night.

The outreach session, titled 'Building Back Stronger - Health', focused on global recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and on strengthening resilience against future pandemics.

During the session, the Indian Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the support extended by the G7 and other guest countries during the recent severe second wave of Covid-19 infections in India.

Modi committed India's support for collective endeavours to improve global health governance and said the G7 meeting should send out a message of "One Earth One Health" for the whole world.

Indian officials said Modi's stress on "keeping the supply chains open for vaccine raw materials and components to increase vaccine supply got widespread support."
