Narada case: Calcutta High Court orders house arrest of 2 ministers of Mamata’s cabinet

The Calcutta High Court today ordered house arrest of four political leaders, including two senior West Bengal ministers who were held in the Narada sting operation case relating to alleged graft.
The division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arijit Banerjee differed in opinion over vacating the stay given by it on bail granted by a special CBI court to ministers Subrata Mukherjee and Firhad Hakim, TMC legislator Madan Mitra and former Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
The bench then directed that the leaders, placed under judicial remand so far, will remain under house arrest for now and also decided to refer the matter to a three-member owing to divergence of opinion between acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arijit Banerjee.
Hearing on the case is still in progress following prayers from both sides for further arguments on the court's house arrest order.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, has pleaded for a stay on the execution of the house arrest order.
Transport and Urban Housing Minister Firhad Hakim, Panchayati Raj Minister Subrata Mukherjee, TMC legislator and former minister Madan Mitra and ex-TMC leader and Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee were arrested by India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on May 17 after being picked up by the probe agency from their residences.
The High Court had on Monday night stayed the trial court's decision to grant bail to the four leaders.
