BSF kills Bangladeshi ‘cattle smuggler’ in Lalmonirhat

Members of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) shot dead an alleged Bangladeshi cattle smuggler at Shamsernagar border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat early today.

The deceased Mizanur Rahman (22), son of Nasim Uddin of Patgram, was a member of a cattle smuggling gang, said Company Commander Lt Col Tazul Islam of 58 Border Guard Bangladesh.

He was shot by patrolling BSF members on the Indian side of the Shamsernagar border near the main pillar no. 862 while trying to "smuggle Indian cattle into Bangladesh".

His cohorts rushed him inside Bangladesh territory and took him to Patgram Upazila Health Complex where he was declared dead, confirmed Resident Medical Officer of the health complex Dr Kali Prasad Sarkar.

Camp Commander Subedar Sultan Hossain of 61 BGB battalion's Shamsernagar company confirmed the incident and said that a group of eight to 10 Bangladeshi cattle smugglers including Mizanur Rahman went to India through Shamsernagar border in order to bring Indian cows.

"Mizanur Rahman was shot dead by members of India's Raninagar 140 BSF battalion's patrolling members at the Chuangarkhata camp. A letter has been sent to the BSF protesting the incident on behalf of BGB," he said.

Patgram Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sumon Kumar Mohanta said, "We have prepared an inquest report on the body. The body will be sent to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital for autopsy."
