Gopalganj-3: 2 grassroots BNP men looking to take on Hasina
Two BNP grassroots leaders have bought party's nomination forms to run for lawmaker from Goplaganj-3, the constituency from where Awami League President Sheikh Hasina will contest.
The prime minister is the lone candidate from the AL in the constituency, which is historically considered the stronghold of the party, for the 11th parliamentary election, scheduled for December 30.
SM Jilani, vice-president of Gopalganj district BNP, and Afjal Hossain, president of Tungipara upazila BNP, are the aspirants of BNP.
Talking to The Daily Star, the two BNP leaders expressed their confidence. They said they would gain victory if the election commission ensured a free and fair polls.
“There are a lot of voters who don't like AL. We will get all those votes in our favour if the election is free and fair. I personally request our prime minister to ensure a free and fair election so that everybody can cast their votes," said Afjal.
BNP leader SM Jilani, who wants to contest the election from the constituency, is now in prison on charge of carrying out subversive activities.
One of Jilani's well-wishers Sirajul Islam, also the president of Gopalganj district BNP, said "Although the Awami League chief is contesting the polls from this constituency, BNP has much popularity here. The BNP candidate will seal the victory if a free and fair election takes place."
