BRACU Law School & Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division organises legislative research workshop

School of Law, BRAC University in collaboration with the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs division, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh jointly organised the workshop titled 'Legislative Research for Identification of Discriminatory Provisions in Existing Laws of Bangladesh' held on 12 December, 2020 at BCDM Savar. 

The day-long event was chaired by Dr. Mohammad Mohiuddin, Project Director (Joint Secretary) Legislative Research and Reform Project. The event was inaugurated with the deliberation of welcome address by the chairperson of the event. Mr. Justice Mirza Hussain Haider, Honourable Justice of the Appellate Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh graced the workshop as the guest of honor. In addressing the participants and commenting on the draft report, he emphasised that no one is above the law and that should be the parameter. Only quality research can help us in reaching to the desired society we are aspiring. He commented that the constitution of Bangladesh offers certain excellent features for which we should be proud of. His lordship reaffirmed that compliance of laws in good faith is important.

The report was presented by Md. Mostafa Hosain, Legal Expert of Package-III & Assistant Professor of School of Law, BRAC University. Two sessions were followed focusing on extracting views and comments of the stakeholders. The sessions were moderated by Mr. Fowzul Azim, Chief Research Officer (Senior District and Sessions Judge), Law Commission of Bangladesh and K. M. Shazzad Mohashin, Associate Professor, Department of Law and Justice of Jahangirnagar University. Stakeholders commented on the laws and shared their concern about brining changes in the laws. A group of delegation including Joint Secretaries and Deputy Secretaries from the legislative and drafting division participated in the discussion. Stakeholder from different organisations, NGOs, corporations, legal practitioners, academicians, researchers, and representatives from other forums participated in the event.

Professor K. Shamsuddin Mahmood, the team leader of package-III and esteemed Dean of school of Law, BRAC University offered the vote of thanks to all participants especially to the resource persons of the legislative and parliamentary affairs division of Law Ministry. He recalled the experience of conducting this unique research on discriminatory provisions and asserted to continue the research work in the law school. Barrister Sazeeda Johora Thakur, Lecturer at School of Law, BRAC University anchored the event.
