Listen more, impress less: Shah Rukh Khan's advice on love
Shah Rukh Khan, the King of Romance as we know, has won millions of fans with his charming on-screen persona. And the glimpses of his true self that we get to see off-screen only makes us love him more. But what does the king of romance think about love himself? Well, true to his well-earned title, SRK's idea of love, romance and relationships is nothing short of poetic.
Here are 5 times Shah Rukh Khan told us how to love, and do it right.
I have a big issue in saying "I love you." If you really do love her, there's no need to keep saying it and if you feel the need to just say it, then maybe love isn't there anymore.
There is nothing like hearing the hero confess his love to the heroine. But SRK says that in real life, the 'I love you' must be felt and understood much more than just exchanged as a greeting. Interestingly enough, he thinks that love can be confessed in a million different ways without even saying it out loud. As long as you care deeply for each other and go out of your way to do things right by yourself and them, the love is strong.
When you love, the bottom line is to be yourself. My perception of love is as simple as being able to make each other laugh and sometimes laughing at each other.
Being yourself, good, bad and all the rest, is perhaps the daunting task. There is the fear of being judged, of being 'too much to handle' or being the reason of a possible breakup. However, according to SRK, this is the true challenge which will clear out any unnecessary confusion. Either you accept each other as whoever you truly are or you part ways knowing the full truth. Either way, there is a sense of peace.
Love resides in very small things in life. We start losing out on love when we start looking for the big things, the grand gestures.
This is coming from the one who taught us the meaning of grand gestures! But then again, the truth in it cannot be denied. Sometimes, it is remembering the small things about each other, supporting them without vocalising it, and genuinely caring for each other is all we need to keep the romance alive.
I think the first thing about being with a woman, or being with a partner, is to start by behaving with a lot of dignity and respect for them. You must respect them as much as you respect yourself.
If chivalry is still alive, Shah Rukh Khan is one of the reasons for it. He admits that there should be equality at all times, but also stresses the fact that some roles are distinctly separated for men and women that add to the beauty of a relationship. "Be equal but do not hesitate to lay down your coat on a puddle if she's about to walk on it. Make sure her heels are safe," he adds jokingly.
Don't try too hard to impress. I think women don't always want to hear how beautiful you think they are. Rather, they want you to listen to them and they want to be heard. It's the genuine care that keeps the romance alive.
First impressions matter, but just impressions don't last. SRK thinks that there is no power quite like the power of listening. If they want to talk, you just listen. You don't necessarily make all their problems go away, but they will definitely see you as the one person who heard them when they needed it. So, instead of investing on impressions with the best clothes, perfumes and poetry, you are better off investing your time and let it work it's magic.
