Surviving the 30s with sanity

Enjoying life in your thirties

If you are an early 90s kid, you've probably been staring at the calendar, counting the last days of your twenties. Expecting the impending doom, many thoughts will and most likely have visited you at night while you stare at the ceiling fan contemplating life decisions.

How far you are from your goals

Thoughts such as, "I'm just a few months away from being middle-aged, and I'm still not a millionaire!" or "Mom keeps nagging on getting me married, but she knows that I am incapable of folding my shirts," and last but not least, "No! My hairline cannot recede!"

With all of that being said, your thirties, without a doubt, could turn out to be one of the best decades of your life. You will generally have a better sense of who you are and tend not to make the same mistakes you made in your twenties. Think about it; your thirties are like your twenties but with money, given that you do not have a dependent spouse or offspring. Those things cost a fortune and both of your kidneys.

An avid calculator cruncher who shall remain unknown said, "During my adolescence, I couldn't wait to grow up, get a job and have kids but not this job and certainly not these kids."

Bones are no longer made of rubber

But your thirties are also the decade when your body starts not to be what it used to be (bones made of rubber) half a decade or a decade back. Not bouncing back as easily from injuries or all-night partying will only remind you of your mortality. And the worst of all, you start losing touch with all the latest trends and music.

What other people are saying

A columnist with the alias of Shahen said, "being in your thirties means enjoying TikTok from afar, but not necessarily needing an account of your own."

It's a weird place in your life where you find solace in shiny crockeries like cast iron pans or 'good' china, saving your face by calling a guy 'buddy' whose name you forgot after meeting at a party, or finally appreciating half-sleeved shirts like your dad. However, with an inevitable epiphany, you will start to relate to your parents on a whole new level. You begin to realise that you really are an extension of them with updated firmware. With enough self-reflection, there will come moments where you will end up reacting the same way as they have, which you found cringy.

Biggest realisation

But the biggest realisation of them all has to be that every one of the people whom you have considered adults until now has been winging it at life; their higher studies, jobs, family and marriage. No one has it figured out from the get-go. If anything, your thirties is the phase where you finally start to figure things out and be the person you are meant to be.

Here are some of the things to help you recover in your thirties:

Drink lots of water.

Start saving. It's difficult, I know.

Get a pet.

Spend more time with your parents when they are not nagging.

Travel at least once a year.

Rewatch shows from the 90s and early 2000s because committing to new things is a chore.

Stop taking a break from the internet on your computer to check out the internet on your phone.

Hit the elevator button multiple times just to be sure.
