Dovetail, minimalist home decor

The two brothers, Rafid Wahid Yaad and Giash Uddin Razin, co-founded their venture, 'Dovetail' about a year ago. "The name symbolises the 'Dovetail joint', as a connection of traditional knowledge and modern design for our venture," shares Rafid.

Beginning merely because of the passion they share for woodwork and woodcraft, the two now have a range of 30 products, with 'thousands of ideas' swimming around in their heads. They specialise in personalised woodcraft, wooden accessories, corporate promotional gifts, modern furniture, contemporary wood art, and interior design, and are ready to patiently listen to their customers to fulfil any demands or requests that they may have.

The first product they launched, with a name prompted by the popular TV series Game of Thrones, is a door stopper which goes by "Hodor," priced at Tk 200 only. The support and guidance they received from their father, who has been in the furniture business for about thirty years, was essential, and that helped in the first bout of acquiring raw material and labour.

Meanwhile, they were called to take part in a fair within the first month of setting up business, and the response they were met with was enough encouragement for Rafid Wahid to leave his job as a software developer and put in extra hours managing Dovetail ensuring that their business would flourish.

The fair also helped in their coming up with ideas for new products. So, Rafid Wahid, along with brother GiashRazin, who is an interior architect, develop designs on AutoCad and test them during their research and design hours, which are just precious to them. They try to input their knowledge attained from working in specialised fields — an engineer in Rafid's case and as an architect in Razin's case. This makes the designs unique and handy, bringing together couture and convenience.

Dovetail's products include a kitchen series complete with trays, rolling pins, cutting boards; a desk organiser series; together with various gadget complements, such as laptop or tablet docks, headphone stand, besides the home decor pieces such as the wooden planter, the live edge mirror or clocks which are just as minimalistic in design as heavy on utility. They even have a wooden portable desk with adjustable angles for a tiltable top side, and when I was looking to buy a laptop table, this product turned out to be the only one that met all my needs, being wide as it is, with the perk of having a little drawer on the right side, and the added bonus of its colour in the natural wood shade that I prefer.

As I could tell from the table alone, and seeing their products at various fairs such as the MIB meetup and Cookup's Bakers Street, Dovetail really did maintain a topnotch quality of wood, using 'premium quality wood like Segun, Burma Teak, Red Oak' to make furniture that verges on art.
