Lighter vessel partially capsizes at bay
A lighter vessel carrying 940 tonnes of peas to Khulna from Chattogram capsized at the bay this morning.
All 12 crewmen of 'MV Golam Rahman' vessel were rescued by the staff of another lighter vessel, while the master of the ship managed to run the vessel to a submerged land mass.
Golam Rahman, master of the vessel, told The Daily Star that the vessel loaded with 940 tonnes of peas worth Tk 2.84 crore, imported by Rubi Foods Products group, left Ghat No-15 of Karnaphuli River at 7.00am for Khulna.
After an hour of journey, the vessel was hit by another lighter vessel at the bay, around 20 miles from Patenga, he said.
Ataul Karim, general secretary of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) said that Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard members are trying to rescue the vessel.
