Madaripur woman sent to jail for killing 13 monkeys
A woman was sent to jail today for reportedly killing 13 monkeys in Madaripur municipality's Maddya-Khagdi area on May 5.
The arrestee was identified as Shahanaj Begum (55), said Madaripur Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Badrul Alam.
"On May 5 some unidentified persons put poison in food and killed at least 13 monkeys claiming they are creating nuisance in the area. Police started investigating the matter and after five days, they detained Shahanaj Begum and her brother-in law Aku Hawlader this morning for interrogation," the ASP said.
During the interrogation, Shahanaj admitted she had given poisoned food to kill the monkeys that day, the police official added.
She also confessed to have killed seven more monkeys a few months ago in the same way. Police produced her before a court and she was sent to jail this afternoon. Aku Hawlader was released as police did not find him guilty, he said.
Some local youths buried eight of the monkeys beside a canal in the area on May 5 evening. They posted footage and photos of the dead animals on Facebook and demanded justice for their death. And the forest department of Madaripur conducted autopsy on 5 monkeys.
Madaripur forest department filed a case with Madaripur Sadar Police Station on May 5 and another case was filed with judicial magistrate court of Madaripur for killing 13 monkeys on May 6.
