A rice-laden truck stuck between a ferry and a pontoon in Patuakhali's Kalapara upazila, after the iron planks connecting them collapsed around 4:30pm yesterday under the weight of the vehicle. A salvage operation was going on when the paper went to press at 10:30pm. As traffic pressure increased on both sides of the Andharmanik river, authorities opened the Sheikh Kamal bridge in advance of its formal inauguration, due in February, to facilitate vehicular movement.
