It is quite impossible to recognise Jail Khal, a canal in Barisal city, because of its present state due to encroachment, earth filling, and dumping of waste into the water body. The authorities concerned of the Barisal City Corporation have not taken any effective measure to protect the canal yet, although its dismal state has been published in the print media innumerable times. The photo was taken on Friday. Photo: Arifur Rahman
A man on a flimsy rope ladder swaying in the wind trying to gain a balance while cleaning the glass façade of a five-storey building in Sagarika area of Chittagong city yesterday. Though his upper body is tied to a rope by a belt, he has no steady footing. Many of such cleaners usually do not even have that belt either, and often die from losing balance. There needs to be a strict regulation for companies that are in the building cleaning business, and always look to cut corners to maximise their profit at the expense of the lives of cheap labourers. A bus crosses the squeaking and rattling Bhakurta Steel Bridge over the Turag yesterday even though a large sign on it forbids heavy vehicles from using the bridge. Even trucks use the bridge every day. Contacted, authorities concerned could not say anything about the condition of the bridge or who put the sign there. About 30,000 residents of 27 villages in Bhakurta union of Savar use the bridge. Photo: Emran Hossain
With all 25 beds taken up by patients, many lay on the floor of the children's ward of Patuakhali General Hospital on Monday. The hospital received around 80 patients that day as the eight upazila government hospitals of the district do not have any child specialists. Photo: Star
