Even a day ago, this would have been unthinkable as Ilias,10, was chained to an electric pole opposite Tejgaon Polytechnic Market by his father, a rickshaw-puller, who barbarically left him in the scorching heat for the last one month, every time he went to work in the morning and then took him home at night, as an excuse of saving him from his step-mother's torture and by claiming that Ilias was mentally unstable. After several print media published Ilias's ordeal, he was rescued yesterday by officials of Tejgaon Industrial Police Station. Md Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge of the station, looks fondly at Ilias as he reads a newspaper at the OC's office. The police have also undertaken the responsibility of his rehabilitation. The colour of the water in this part of the Louhajang river in Khudirampur area of Tangail clearly says how recklessly toxic waste from local factories is dumped into the river. The authorities concerned have turned a blind eye to it. The photo was taken recently. Photo: Mirza Shakil
Dirty water intruding into the Karnaphuli from Roy Bahadur Khal, a canal which flows through Chittagong city before emptying into the river at Sadarghat Banglabazar. The pollution the discharge causes is threatening the aquatic life of the river. And the city residents are mostly responsible for this because they indiscriminately dump waste into the canal despite the city corporation's awareness campaign over the last six months. The corporation also placed garbage containers in some places but the city dwellers are still reluctant. Not only this canal, Chaktai Khal, Rajakhali Khal, and Mohesh Khal also carry such polluted water into the Karnaphuli. The photo was taken yesterday.
People flock to various telecom operators' stalls set up on a footpath near the capital's Gulshan-1 intersection yesterday, as tomorrow is the last day to complete SIM re-registration biometrically. The last minute rush is also proving to be cumbersome for the operators, who sought more time from the authorities. Photo: Star
