Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina talks to ailing poet Syed Shamsul Haque at the United Hospital in Gulshan in the capital yesterday. She spent around 40 minutes with the poet. At one stage the poet became emotional. She also talked to his doctors and enquired about his treatment. Hasina took the responsibility of his treatment. The poet is suffering from lung cancer. The 80-year-old writer won the Bangla Academy Award in 1966, Ekushey Padak in 1984 and Bangladesh's highest civilian honour, Independence Award, in 2000 for his outstanding contribution to Bangla literature. A man waits for a ride next to a billboard put up by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police as part of an awareness programme to alert the city dwellers to not to get on board of any private vehicles in order to protect themselves from possible kidnapping. Due to unavailability of service or scarcity of space inside public transports, many take refuge of these vehicles during rush hours or public holidays, which may cause an avoidable accident putting their lives at risk.
