The canals of Dhaka city face existential threats from multiple sides -- throwing of garbage, encroachment, and building of structures. Not only are these acts illegal but they are the very reason the city residents suffer immensely with waste material choking and filling up the channel, grabbers narrowing them down, and structures blocking the flow of water, eventually causing waterlogging. The photo of these shops built on bamboo structures was taken on Manda canal a week ago. Photo: Sk Enamul Haq
