This undated handout photo released yesterday by the Children First Foundation shows three-year-old Choity Khatun, left, with her mother Shima, right, in hospital in Melbourne after she had life saving reconstructive surgery. Choity had parts of her twin developed in her perineum -- the area between the anus and the vulva -- as well as a third leg, and was considered to have little prospect of survival. But an Australian charity, Children First Foundation, bought her to Melbourne last year, where a team of surgeons spent several months mapping out a procedure to reconstruct her anatomy. Photo: AFP
The DND canal adjoining Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Narayanganj's Shimrail is being choked to death, as a group of unscrupulous traders continue to build illegal structures, encroaching on the water body. There is hardly any initiative by the authorities to free the canal from the clutches of the grabbers. Photo: Anisur Rahman
Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) conducting renovation works in the West Agargaon canal, which include dredging and building of concrete canal linings. After implementation, the canal will drain more waste water and help prevent waterlogging in the area. But the way the works are being done involves risks as Wasa has not built a fence along the road to prevent accidents and erosion of the road, particularly during rains. The photo was taken yesterday. Photo: Rashed Shumon
