EVERYWHERE THERE'S DUST IN THE WIND... This photo taken on Kazi Nazrul Islam Road in the capital is not of usual dust kicked up by vehicles. City dwellers and commuters were caught off guard yesterday afternoon, around 4:30pm, when a sudden strong wind created this dust storm. Massive construction work of flyovers, metro rail and year-long development works by city corporations, different government utility service providers and private development firms have turned Dhaka into a dust bowl. On January 25 last year, the High Court demanded an explanation from the government on the steps taken to remove dust, smoke and other deadly elements causing damage to public health in four city corporations -- DSCC, DNCC, Gazipur and Narayanganj. No noticeable measure, however, has yet been taken by the authorities in this regard. Photo: Prabir Das

Although the city is off limits to trucks and inter-district buses during the daytime, this 10-wheeler truck broke down around 11:30am near TSC in Dhaka University. The truck could have caused fatalities if it tipped over in the busy road. According to the driver, the odd-shaped cargo, nearly 42 tonnes, slid to one side damaging the suspension of the 35-tonne capacity vehicle. Photo: Prabir Das
