THE FLYING RAINBOW
An Indian Pitta resting on a fallen tree branch in Dhaka. Native to the Indian subcontinent, the Indian Pitta gets its name from the Telugu word “pitta”, meaning “small bird”. It is sometimes also referred to as “aaru mani kuruvi”, meaning “6’o clock bird”, as its calls can be heard at both 6:00am and 6:00pm. Though very colourful, this bird is very shy and remains hidden in the undergrowth of trees, and hunts for food, mainly insects, on the forest floor. Solitary in nature, an Indian Pitta will only associate with others of its kind during breeding season or migration!

The roads in the capital are devoid of the rush of vehicles as many city-dwellers have already left the capital to celebrate Eid outside Dhaka. The photo of the nearly empty Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover was taken yesterday.
