The Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Dhaka’s Rayerbazar is covered with wreaths, placed by different political parties, social and cultural organisations, and ordinary citizens on the occasion of the Martyred Intellectuals Day yesterday. The nation paid respect to the brightest minds, who were killed by the Pakistan Army towards the end of the Liberation War. Photo: Star
FLUTTERING COLOURS A painted jezebel taking a lunch break near the National Press Club in the capital. Scientifically known as Delias hyparete, this medium-sized butterfly is common in South and Southeast Asia, with occurrences in multiple habitats in nature reserves and urban areas. This butterfly only descends to take nectar from flowers or to rest in the shade under trees, otherwise, it can be seen fluttering at tree-top levels during most of the day, as the only known caterpillar host plant for this butterfly is the Malayan Mistletoe – a parasitic plant found on growing trees. It can’t be mistaken for any other butterfly due to its striking colours and graceful flight pattern --. However, the red and yellow on its underside hindwings isn’t for beauty purposes but is a warning to predators as it accumulates adequate toxicity during its early stages as a caterpillar!
