English Road vs. Inglis Road: The curious evolution of a name
Dhaka's English Road is familiar to all of us, except one thing — we probably have been spelling it wrong all along! This also begs the question: is English Road really named after the English as the general assumption goes?
The road is actually named after a man named Inglis (or Ingles), divisional commissioner of Dhaka around a century ago. This theory shatters the notion that the area took its name from the English community.
In his book 'Dacca: History and Romance in Place Names', Azimusshan Haider challenged, "Even certain scholars have made this mistake, apparently under the impression that the name has to do with the early settlement of the Englishmen in the locality.
This, however, is not corroborated by any historical account."
We'll stick to calling it English Road of course, but the corruption or evolution of the name presents a rare but fascinating footnote of Dhaka's history!
