BNP's joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today said the government will not be able to resist a “mass upsurge” by resorting to arrest and other repressive acts.
“We want to clearly say that the movement for restoring non-party government cannot be stopped by arresting our leaders and activists,” he said while talking to reporters at the party’s central office at Nayapaltan in the capital.
Rizvi said: “The government has become desperate sensing its fall. They’re arresting opposition leaders and activists by taking position against the people of the country.”
Alleging that the police confined opposition chief Khaleda Zia to her Gulshan residence by putting a cordon, he said no one is also allowed to enter the BNP’s Nayapaltan office, which is guarded by a large posse of police.
On the absence of party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the party office during the hartal hour, Rizvi said: “Our acting secretary general is in a safe place considering the overall situation. He has been giving direction for the movement by communicating with leaders of all level.”
